Music is Therapeutic

This class consisted of a mother with her two young daughters (one sleeping in her stroller), and another mom with her infant, and it was one of the most meaningful RSF classes I've taught. Both mothers were very engaged, but it was halfway through the class that I noticed that the mom of two was starting to get emotional in a song where she was snuggling with her older daughter. I believe the class was cathartic for her, and she let some tears come out towards the end of class. The support staff and I supported her afterwards, and it was a great honour to hold space for her. I could see how much she cared for her daughters, and I shared with her that I could see what a great mother she was. It was very powerful, and I shed cathartic tears myself on my drive home.

Energy!

Last night at Arise was a full house and lots of fun! It was the biggest class we've had in a while there, and it was so nice to see all the little kiddos together again. Highlights included playing the ocean drum together while singing Listen to the Water, marching to The Ants Go Marching, and then a dance party to Blame It on the Boogie, at the end of class. This group is a riot (in a great way!)

C Major Kids!

Hard work gets great rewards! These dedicated musicians have learned their C Major chord on the ukulele and are working on two different strumming patterns. They are so creative and outgoing, always willing to share their music with the whole group. We had a new 14-month-old student today, I asked the big kids to play gentle music to welcome her to the class and they were so thoughtful and warm this sweet baby had a huge smile the entire class!

Songwriting!

The kids were bursting with creative energy today! We started with a call and response rhythm circle, adding vocal explorations and movement explorations as we repeated. All the kids were super into it and seemed to be having a lot of fun with the creative freedom. Then we went back to the tables and focused on songwriting, with the kids shouting out suggestions for song topics that they could make rhymes for. We ended up with a hybrid song about money and gummy bears, and some of the lyrics were silly and fun, others were genuine poetry! During our checkout, lots of kids said they were feeling happy, and so was I!

Flower Growing

Dancing, sleeping, hopping, and hiding - these are all of the things little bunnies love to do in a colourful garden of flowers. During this class we used colourful scarves to explore different kinds of movement as we pretended to be flowers in a garden. This was a sleepy bunch who were off to bed but when they saw me walk through the door they got excited and conjured a second wind for music class!

Participative Kids, Enthusiastic Staff

What a superb evening of music we had this week at Robertson House. The kids were participating and getting silly with the songs from the first song to the very last chord of the class.

A new staff (new to being in the room with the group but has always enjoyed it from the front desk) was super excited to be part of it and that energy definitely fuelled everybody else’s.

A highlight was the fun Put Your Finger in the Air, in which we find body parts with our pointer finger and do silly actions like touching the nose to “see if it grows”.

Excitement is the Word!

We had such an excited group of participants at our music class this week at Nellie’s. With enthusiasm and excitement, the kids engaged in the actions and movement for each song and even requested their favourite Sleeping Bunnies, by going to “pretend sleeping” and waiting for the song to start.

Another highlight was playing I’m Walking On Sunshine for our jam. It was requested by one of the kids on the week before and I learned it to play this time.

Birthday and Earth Day

Last week's class was a special day as it was one of the children's birthdays! And with Earth Day coming up, we celebrated with songs about the environment (and of course Happy Birthday as well). The biggest hit was Row, Row, Row Your Boat, when all four children in the class made a big boat by making a circle and holding each other's hands and swaying forwards and backwards. They were delightfully loud during the "don't forget to scream!" section. Lots of giggles!
